Do Pacifiers Affect Babies’ Teeth?

Many parents ask, “Do pacifiers affect babies’ teeth?” Pacifiers can provide babies with a soothing sensation, which keeps them content and provides a feeling of relaxation. However, frequent pacifier use may cause dental issues and complications as teeth develop. Our team at Sokoloff Orthodontics will educate you on how it’s possible to give your baby a pacifier and avoid the problems it may cause.

What Are The Benefits Of Pacifiers?

Any parent who has seen a baby content with a pacifier doesn’t doubt the benefits of its use. In fact, pediatric research shows that pacifier use in very young babies shouldn’t be discouraged, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that pacifiers are preferred over the habit of thumb-sucking. Pacifiers for babies have the power to provide pain relief, relaxation, and comfort whenever necessary. Doctors publishing with the American Academy of Family Physicians explain that pacifiers actually have a positive influence on kids between one and six months old. Children who use pacifiers have shown to have a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

What Are Pacifier Teeth?

Pacifier teeth is a condition that may occur as a result of extended pacifier use. A baby’s mouth and teeth begin forming in the womb and continue to grow throughout childhood. Any object held in an infant’s mouth for long periods during this important time can affect tooth positioning and dental development. According to the AAPD and American Dental Association, the dental effects of frequent pacifier use include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Problems with jaw alignment
  • Protruding front teeth
  • Changes to the roof of the mouth

What Age Should My Baby Stop Using A Pacifier?

Parents can avoid the risks of their baby developing pacifier teeth by weaning their baby away from the pacifier by age two. By this age, some dental effects may be seen, but the greatest changes appear in children older than four years. Pacifiers have also shown to increase the risk of ear infections in babies older than six months.

What Are The Effects Of Pacifiers On A Babies’ Teeth?

do pacifiers affect babies teethThe long-term use of a pacifier changes mouth shape and the alignment of teeth. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the overuse of pacifiers affects mouth and teeth development the same way as long-term thumb-sucking. As a child’s upper front teeth tip forward, teeth may become crooked, which leads to biting problems. There may also be changes in jaw alignment and tooth positioning, which will require braces or Invisalign to correct. The American Dental Association states that other symptoms of pacifier teeth include open bite and changes on the roof of the mouth.

How Do I Stop My Baby From Using A Pacifier?

At Sokoloff Orthodontics, we understand that encouragement and praise are the best tools for breaking a pacifier habit. Praising your baby for not using a pacifier, and providing a reward can create a sense of motivation to stop. If children use pacifiers when feeling anxious, try avoiding stressful situations and offering cuddles and other comforts. For young babies who need some extra soothing at times, pacifiers provide the perfect feeling of reassurance. As long as pacifier use doesn’t become frequent, there is no risk of developing pacifier teeth.

A Straight Smile Is the Best First Impression

We all know the saying, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but the reality is: we all do. First impressions are really important and your smile says a lot about you. That’s why at Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, we care about not only helping our teens, but about helping adults as well. A straight smile is crucial to making that first impression count…and metal braces as an adult isn’t necessarily the most desired look. Because of this we offer Invisalign Adult! The clear alternative to metal braces.

In a recent study* by Invisalign, confirms that “people with straight teeth are perceived more likely to be happy, successful and second date worthy.” Speaking of dating, 55% of respondents said that a straight smile had a better likelihood of attracting potential partners on a dating site by their picture alone.

Already found your partner but still think straighter teeth would have a strong impact on your life? You’re right! 58% of respondents said that they perceive people with straight teeth to be more successful in business and their professional lives. That means a straight smile can be a big component of your interview kit, rocking your next presentation or winning that next sale.

How Does Thumb Sucking Affect Teeth?

What Is Thumb Sucking?

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for infants and children. Sucking on thumbs, pacifiers, or other objects may create a feeling of security or soothe them to help with falling asleep. Thumb sucking is a stereotypical habit of babies, so it may feel unnatural to intervene. However, a White Plains orthodontist understands that breaking the habit of thumb sucking is important to avoid causing developmental issues in the mouth.

How Can Thumb Sucking Affect My Child’s Teeth?

Once a child’s permanent teeth come in, thumb sucking may affect the proper alignment of the growth of teeth and jaw. The intensity of thumb sucking is a factor that determines the level of damage. Some children who are aggressive thumbsuckers may develop problems with their baby teeth early on.
The force of thumb sucking can cause teeth to tip forward, which leads to complicated malocclusions such as open bites, crossbites, or overjets.

What Are The Consequences Of Thumb Sucking?

Similar to pacifiers, thumb sucking can help very young children develop jaw muscles. However, after that, it quickly becomes an issue. Thumb sucking is a habit that may cause a child to withdraw and ‘zone out’ instead of interacting. While thumb sucking may appear like an innocent habit, the results can affect your child’s health later on in their adult life. The long-term negative consequences of thumb sucking include:

  • Narrowing of the jaw
  • Shrinking the airway
  • Altered breathing
  • Poor swallow patterns
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Hindered speech
  • Abnormal tongue placement

When Should Children Stop Sucking Their Thumbs?

how does thumb sucking affect teeth white plains nyChildren usually stop sucking their thumbs between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time their permanent front teeth start to erupt. If you notice abnormalities in your child’s primary teeth or are concerned about your child’s thumb sucking, consult with a White Plains orthodontist such as Dr. Sokoloff. Remember, the older a child gets the more difficult breaking this habit can be.

5 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN TEEN®

5 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN TEEN®

Many parents in our area know about Invisalign®, the virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without metal braces. But as a leading Invisalign provider in the White Plains area, I’m often asked for more information about Invisalign® Teen.

Keeping it simple, rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign® Teen uses a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-made for your teen’s teeth. These are a result of precise images I take with the sophisticated iTero Element Scanner. Your teen simply wears these aligners over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners periodically—typically every two weeks. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place.

Here are the answers to the top five questions I’m asked about Invisalign Teen. I hope you find them helpful!

  1. INVISALIGN TEEN CAN BE AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES.

When worn according to the customized plan I set in place, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces. In fact, the chances are very high your teen will be a candidate for Invisalign since it can treat many of the common issues we see. Click here to set up an appointment to find out for sure.

  1. THERE ARE PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OF INVISALIGN TEEN OVER TRADITIONAL BRACES.

With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so your teen can play sports, musical instruments and eat their favorite foods without the worry that braces will get in the way. Plus, it’s much easier to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene.

  1. THIS  INVISIBLE SOLUTION CAN BOOST CONFIDENCE.

Research shows that parents underestimate the extent to which teens feel self-conscious about their smile—and their appearance in general. Wearing braces can often make this lack of confidence even worse. Invisalign Teen removes a potential source of anxiety, giving them more confidence during what can be a challenging time in their lives.

In fact, a recent study* found that only 22% of teens feel that wearing braces does/will boost their self-esteem; whereas, nearly half of teens report wearing Invisalign does/will boost their self-esteem (47%). Likewise, 40% of Teens reported that wearing braces would/does negatively impact their self-confidence during treatment; whereas, only 8% of Teens reported the same about wearing their Invisalign aligners. (After conversations with our Adult patients, we think the findings would be similar there as well.)

  1. YOUR TEEN DOES HAVE TO WEAR THE ALIGNERS MOST OF THE DAY.

Invisalign Teen is most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day and when the alighers are changed out approximately every two weeks. In fact, Invisalign Teen aligners have blue indicators that fade over time when used as directed. This helps me track compliance.

  1. YOU’LL SPEND LESS TIME AT MY OFFICE THAN WITH TRADITIONAL BRACES.

Invisalign Teen often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces do. There are no adjustments to make, no brackets to re-glue and no broken wires to fix. That means less emergency visits; and after the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every four to six weeks.

At my practice, Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, I treat every patient like family. We offer customized financial plans and participate in most  insurance plans. If you think Invisalign Teen might be right for you or your child, please click below to schedule a complimentary consultation. I look forward to meeting you!
