What Foods To Eat and Avoid with Braces

Getting braces definitely makes eating your favorite foods a bit trickier. At Sokoloff Orthodontics, we want you to feel comfortable eating while you get used to your new braces.

Foods to avoid:

Sticky foods:

  • Gum (sugar-free or regular)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst

Hard foods:

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Pizza crust
  • Uncooked carrots (unless cut)

Minimize Sugary Foods like:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy

Only Once a Day:

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Drinks with sugar

Generally, we recommended to stick with soft, smooth, easy to chew items. It can be difficult to decide what to eat when you get your braces. Foods that are safe to eat with braces include:

  • Dairy – soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks, yogurts, cottage cheese, eggs
  • Breads – soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains – pasta, soft cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry tender meats, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood
  • Vegetables – mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, beans
  • Fruits – applesauce, bananas, fruit juice, smoothies, berries
  • Treats – ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, plain chocolates, peanut butter cups, brownies, soft cookies. But remember to always limit your intake on sugar!

We also suggest you drink a lot of water! Many of our patients fall into the trap of sugar treats like milkshakes and ice cream when they first get their braces. Try healthier alternatives like oatmeal, soup or yogurt. You might even find a new favorite food!

If you experience soreness:

Chances are your mouth is a little tender or sore. This is perfectly normal and expected during your adjustment to new braces. Be sure to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, call our office right away to arrange an appointment for repair.

To relieve any pain or discomfort, we suggest dissolving one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle the solution in your mouth for a few minutes (do not swallow the saltwater).

If the pain is more severe and does not go away after rinsing, you can also try taking a pain reliever. It’s also common for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to become irritated for a few weeks as they toughen and adjust to the braces. We are happy to give you some wax that you can put over the braces to lessen the tenderness should you need some.

When Should A Child Have Their First Visit With An Orthodontist?

There is no set age for a child to have their first orthodontic visit. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist around age 7, once their permanent teeth come in. At this age, many issues including uneven bite and overcrowding are apparent and treatable. Starting the process early allows a White Plains orthodontist to be able to identify problems and decide the best treatment options available.

What Happens During A Child’s First Visit With An Orthodontist?

first orthodontic visit white plains nyAt the first visit, a White Plains orthodontist examines your child’s teeth, mouth, and jaw. We evaluate a child’s current condition from teeth alignment, bite positioning, chewing functionality, and more to identify any arising problems. Dr. Sokoloff may take X-rays of the teeth and mouth to see positioning and whether any permanent teeth are still coming in. These digital images allow for an orthodontist to determine the best form of orthodontic treatment available to fix the necessary issues.

What Are The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

The goal of early treatment is to intercept any developing orthodontic problems, eliminate the causes, and provide adequate space for future permanent teeth. Some patients require a second course of treatment after all permanent teeth are in to shift teeth into their best positions. An orthodontist may recommend treatment while a child still has some baby teeth for conditions including:

  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Abnormal bites
  • Excessively spaced teeth
  • Overcrowded and missing teeth
  • Pacifier or thumb sucking that is affecting teeth or jaw growth

Where Can I Find Clear Braces In Westchester CountyNY?

Our team at Sokoloff Orthodontics specializes in braces and clear braces in Westchester County NY. As a leading Westchester orthodontist, Dr. Sokoloff is experienced in treating common orthodontic issues including irregular spacing between teeth, overcrowding, and misalignment.

How Do Clear Braces Work?

Clear braces, also known as ceramic braces work the same way as traditional metal braces. However, they replace the use of stainless steel brackets for translucent brackets that are designed to blend in with your natural tooth color. Clear braces can be made of ceramic or porcelain, and also features other clear components such as wires to ensure the most discreet aesthetic. The brackets are bonded to the front surface of teeth and connected together using archwires and elastics. These wires and elastics are periodically tightened throughout the duration of treatment in order to maintain consistent pressure and shift teeth into their desired positions.

How Much Do Clear Braces Cost?

The cost of braces and Invisalign is different for each patient. The braces cost is usually dependent on individual factors including the number of visits required, the duration, and the location of treatment. However, the cost of clear braces in Westchester County may be more affordable than surrounding areas.

Traditional Braces Vs. Clear Braces

At Sokoloff Orthodontics, we offer different types of braces to ensure that we provide the best treatment option specifically for you. However, the benefits of clear braces begin with their discreet appearance. Clear braces are made to match your natural tooth color. As a result, you receive the advantages of orthodontic treatment without affecting your personal or professional life. In addition, clear braces may also provide more comfort and cause less irritation because they are made of ceramic or porcelain instead of stainless steel. Semi-translucent ceramic braces are more commonly used for whiter teeth, while tooth-colored ceramic is used for darker color teeth.

What Are The Benefits Of Clear Braces Westchester County NY?

They are strong and durable enough to last throughout your full treatment time, and they offer a greater level of comfort by being less likely to irritate your gums. The Truth Of How Alcohol Affects Your Teeth

How Does Alcohol Affect Teeth?

Many people wonder how alcohol affects your teeth. Alcoholic beverages in moderation, are perfectly fine. However, excessive consumption has detrimental effects on your overall health, including gums and teeth. People who are heavier drinkers are at major risk for gum disease, tooth decay, canker sores, oral cancer and more. However, for a light to moderate drinker, a good dental hygiene routine will help prevent certain problems from occurring.

What Effects Does Alcohol Have On Teeth?

Tooth Decay – Sugar intake is a major risk factor in tooth decay because the bacteria in your mouth live on sugar, which means sipping on sugary drinks provides an environment for bacteria to thrive. In addition, citrusy drinks (even a squeeze of lemon) is enough to break down tooth enamel and cause tooth sensitivity or cavities.

Staining – Many alcoholic beverages have color due to Chromogens, which latch on to tooth enamel weakened by the acid in alcohol to stain teeth. Red wines or dark sodas make it especially difficult to maintain a vibrant smile.

Dry Mouth – Drinks that are high in alcohol content, like liquor, often dry out the mouth. Saliva helps remove plaque and bacteria from teeth which reduces the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

How Do I Avoid The Negative Effects Of Alcohol?
