Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Most people now qualify as a good candidate for Invisalign, although an orthodontic examination is necessary to know for sure. If you have ever been told that Invisalign® couldn’t help you, it may be time for a second opinion. Improvements in the technology and capabilities of Invisalign® continue to expand the usability of this treatment method.

Invisalign Can Successfully Treat Complex Problems

When Invisalign® entered the orthodontic marketplace in 1999, people weren’t quite sure what to make of it. Within a few years, people began seeing proven results. Since then, Align Technology continues to improve and introduce innovations making Invisalign® even better.

Originally, Invisalign® was only useful in correcting minor alignment issues. With the addition of their new base material, versatility continues to increase. SmartTrack® material is the result of more than 8 years of intense research and the testing of over 260 different polymers. It adds durability and increases reliability to the entire Invisalign® process.

Although the list is long, here are a few of the problems that Invisalign® can now address successfully:

  • Crossbite
  • Under- and overbite
  • Open bite
  • Gap teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth

Whether your alignment issue is minor or complex, seeking a consultation to find out how Invisalign® can help is a good move. Although an orthodontist may recommend a different treatment method, Invisalign® is now a very viable option for most orthodontic problems.

Exploring How Invisalign Treatment Works

Unlike traditional braces, which move teeth using tension, Invisalign® works using gentle, but constant, pressure. The process to begin treatment is pretty simple:

  • patient meets with a doctor for x-rays, digital images, and oral examination
  • Doctor creates a 3D “map” of the patient’s mouth using an intraoral scanner
  • Using the “map,” the doctor creates series of alignment trays
  • Patient uses trays sequentially to align teeth

Each tray is custom-fit. A patient wears a tray set for about two weeks before shifting to the next set of trays in the series. Trays need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. They can be removed for eating, drinking, and oral care.

The care routine for trays is easy also. Rinse them every time you remove them before placing them in the storage case. Brush them with a soft-bristled brush often, using a drop of liquid soap for added cleaning. Soak trays once daily for deep cleaning.

At each appointment, which occurs every six to eight weeks, the patient will receive a new series of tray aligners. The average treatment plan takes 12 to 18 months. Some complex issues may take longer, and minor issues may be done in as few as six months. Using AcceleDent® can speed up the entire treatment process.
