Answering the question, “How long does Invisalign take?” isn’t as easy as just quoting a timeline. There is no set timeframe for Invisalign because every smile is unique.
Some treatment plans can be as short as six months. The average treatment plan takes 12 to 18 months. However, there are some treatment plans that can take as long as 36 months.
Understanding Why Invisalign Treatment Plans Vary
We mentioned that every smile is different. When you see an orthodontist for the first time, they will evaluate the current alignment of your teeth. After checking x-rays, digital images, and performing an oral examination, they will have a complete picture of what corrective measures are necessary for you.

For every patient, the orthodontist will create a custom treatment plan. This plan will add detail for many things:
- Type of treatment (braces, Invisalign, or other types)
- Duration of the treatment plan
- Details about the type of treatment such as oral care
- Cost, insurance, and payment options
If you begin with minor alignment issues, your treatment plan may only be six to nine months. However, if you have more complicated alignment problems, your treatment plan will be longer.
The only way to know how long your treatment will take is to have an examination. Then the orthodontist will create your custom treatment plan.
Finding Out How Long Your Invisalign Will Take
While this invisible tray alignment can handle problems from minor to complex, not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign treatment. To find out if you are a good candidate for Invisalign, the orthodontist must complete an examination.
When you make the appointment for your first visit, you will leave with many answers. It is important to us that patients finish their first appointment with a complete understanding of our recommendations for treatment.
In order to be able to do that, we ask that you bring any recent panoramic x-rays (within the past six months). If you have dental insurance, bring that information also so that we can include insurance benefits in your cost estimate.
