We know that when it comes to straightening smiles, traditional braces are a tried-and-true orthodontic treatment. Meanwhile, we’re hearing more about Invisalign, both from the company itself and professional providers. In this post, I will discuss my perspective as well as the merits and drawbacks of each treatment.
Braces
In the past, traditional braces have been the only option to correct issues with crowding, overbite, and crooked teeth. Brackets cemented to the face of the tooth hold a wire that runs lengthwise to apply pressure, moving teeth into place with ties that secure wires to the brackets. A patient realizes slight adjustments over time as the orthodontist applies treatment every few weeks.
Invisalign
Invisalign is a clear plastic dental appliance that offers a patient an alternative to traditional braces. The doctor takes a digital scan of the patient’s teeth creating a 3D image that’s used to create a set of aligners made from a clear material worn by the patient 20 to 22 hours every day (they should only be taken out to eat and brush). Each aligner is configured to slightly adjust the teeth according to a predetermined plan mapped out by the doctor.

What’s right for you
The decision to use Invisalign versus braces can be a difficult one and there are many factors to consider for both the patient and doctor. Invisalign allows for more freedoms and is virtually invisible compared to braces, but compliance is key regarding successful results with Invisalign.
Invisalign also may not be a viable option if you need to rotate or move your teeth vertically. So before making your decision, remember there are trade-offs between both methods, and you will need to consult a professional provider experienced with Invisalign like XXX to determine the most effective option to perfect your smile!
