The Road to a Selfie-Ready Smile for Your Teen

Remember when your kid was little and you’d yell “Say cheese!” before snapping a photo? All those goofy smiles. As your child has grown into a teen, does he still smile for photos? A big, real smile showing his teeth?

All parents want their teenagers to be happy, confident and feel good about themselves. The teen years are rough! Those years of feelings awkward and insecure – don’t remind me! They say our smiles are the gateways to our hearts, but many of us are too insecure about our teeth to let our smiles shine.  Now more than ever, we have options to get your teen that selfie-ready smile before they’re off to college.

Two main questions parents and teens have about orthodontics are:

  1. Will it hurt?
  2. How long will this take?

Think of your options as the settings on your GPS. Whether your teen prefers the fastest route or the more enjoyable scenic route, we will get her to her destination of a straighter smile.

Fastest route

If your teen is of the mindset that the quicker the better, then braces and AcceleDent® is the way to go. You may not be familiar with AcceleDent, an orthodontics system that goes over the braces for 20 minutes each day to accelerate the work the braces are doing by up to 50%. Which means shorter time in braces!

Scenic route

If your teen is concerned about how she will look with metal braces or that braces will restrict her too much, she should ask about Invisalign® Teen. Invisalign aligners are made of nearly invisible clear plastic. Some teens also like that the aligners are removable so she can eat whatever she wants.

There is no right or wrong answer – it’s a matter of which treatment process is right for your teen. The great news is that you have options! Call our office at (914)9490068 or click below to schedule a consultation to get your teen a straighter smile by college!

Invisalign Scarsdale NY

Where Can I Find Invisalign Near Me In Scarsdale NY?

AtSokoloff Orthodontics, we specialize in Invisalign and Invisalign Teen in Scarsdale NY. As a leading White Plains orthodontist, Dr. Sokoloff provides the highest quality orthodontic care at an affordable price that is able to accommodate any budget.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

We understand that no two patients have the same exact needs, therefore no two plans for treatment are ever identical. The Invisalign cost is typically dependent on personal factors such as location, length of treatment, and severity of issues. However, the cost of Invisalign in Scarsdale NY may be cheaper compared to a larger city or a higher income neighborhood.

Is Invisalign Only For Adults?

No, we offer Invisalign Teen as well! For a teenager, appearances are everything. Although this is an ideal time for orthodontic treatment, traditional braces hinder your child’s appearance and affect their daily life for the entire duration of treatment. However, clear aligners eliminate the negative aspects of traditional braces. Special occasions such as yearbook pictures or senior prom no longer have to be remembered with a mouth full of metal brackets. Aligners are also removable for extracurricular activities such as sports or band practice.

Why Choose Invisalign Over Braces?

invisalign scarsdale nyInvisalign provides distinct benefits that are not possible with traditional braces. Braces affect your appearance and restrict your diet choices throughout the length of treatment. Traditional braces are composed of metal, archwires, and elastics, which tend to cause discomfort for many patients. Invisalign offers distinct advantages such as being:

  • Removable – enjoy all of your favorite foods, drinks, and activities during treatment.
  • Clear – remain virtually invisible, providing straighter teeth without anyone having to know.
  • Comfortable – smooth thermoplastic trays guarantee maximum comfort and a perfect fit.

What Foods To Eat and Avoid with Braces

Getting braces definitely makes eating your favorite foods a bit trickier. At Sokoloff Orthodontics, we want you to feel comfortable eating while you get used to your new braces.

Foods to avoid:

Sticky foods:

  • Gum (sugar-free or regular)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starburst

Hard foods:

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread crust/rolls
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Pizza crust
  • Uncooked carrots (unless cut)

Minimize Sugary Foods like:

  • Cake
  • Ice Cream
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Candy

Only Once a Day:

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Gatorade
  • Kool-Aid
  • Drinks with sugar

Generally, we recommended to stick with soft, smooth, easy to chew items. It can be difficult to decide what to eat when you get your braces. Foods that are safe to eat with braces include:

  • Dairy – soft cheese, pudding, milk-based drinks, yogurts, cottage cheese, eggs
  • Breads – soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins without nuts
  • Grains – pasta, soft cooked rice
  • Meats/poultry tender meats, meatballs, lunch meats
  • Seafood
  • Vegetables – mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, beans
  • Fruits – applesauce, bananas, fruit juice, smoothies, berries
  • Treats – ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O, plain chocolates, peanut butter cups, brownies, soft cookies. But remember to always limit your intake on sugar!

We also suggest you drink a lot of water! Many of our patients fall into the trap of sugar treats like milkshakes and ice cream when they first get their braces. Try healthier alternatives like oatmeal, soup or yogurt. You might even find a new favorite food!

If you experience soreness:

Chances are your mouth is a little tender or sore. This is perfectly normal and expected during your adjustment to new braces. Be sure to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, call our office right away to arrange an appointment for repair.

To relieve any pain or discomfort, we suggest dissolving one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle the solution in your mouth for a few minutes (do not swallow the saltwater).

If the pain is more severe and does not go away after rinsing, you can also try taking a pain reliever. It’s also common for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to become irritated for a few weeks as they toughen and adjust to the braces. We are happy to give you some wax that you can put over the braces to lessen the tenderness should you need some.

When Should Children Have Their First Orthodontic Visit?

Where Can I Find The Best Orthodontist In White Plains NY?

Our team at Sokoloff Orthodontics are experts in orthodontic treatment such as braces and Invisalign in White Plains NY. As a leading orthodontist, Dr. Sokoloff specializes in treating patients of all ages and dental conditions. As a result, we are able to provide thorough and effective treatment that achieves optimal results as quickly as possible.

When Should A Child Have Their First Visit With An Orthodontist?

There is no set age for a child to have their first orthodontic visit. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist around age 7, once their permanent teeth come in. At this age, many issues including uneven bite and overcrowding are apparent and treatable. Starting the process early allows a White Plains orthodontist to be able to identify problems and decide the best treatment options available.

What Happens During A Child’s First Visit With An Orthodontist?

first orthodontic visit white plains nyAt the first visit, a White Plains orthodontist examines your child’s teeth, mouth, and jaw. We evaluate a child’s current condition from teeth alignment, bite positioning, chewing functionality, and more to identify any arising problems. Dr. Sokoloff may take X-rays of the teeth and mouth to see positioning and whether any permanent teeth are still coming in. These digital images allow for an orthodontist to determine the best form of orthodontic treatment available to fix the necessary issues.

What Are The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

The goal of early treatment is to intercept any developing orthodontic problems, eliminate the causes, and provide adequate space for future permanent teeth. Some patients require a second course of treatment after all permanent teeth are in to shift teeth into their best positions. An orthodontist may recommend treatment while a child still has some baby teeth for conditions including:

  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Abnormal bites
  • Excessively spaced teeth
  • Overcrowded and missing teeth
  • Pacifier or thumb sucking that is affecting teeth or jaw growth

For Young Kids Orthodontics Isn’t Just About A Pretty Smile

Every parent wants their child to be able to smile with confidence but for many that’s not the only reason to investigate orthodontics at an early age. While the average age for orthodontic treatment is around 12 years old, we at Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics have a mission to focus on children 7 and up to follow up with the American Association of Orthodontics guidelines. Why, you ask?

Early Orthodontic treatment has many benefits. An orthodontic consult at an early age can catch future issues and adjust for them before they become problems. Some of these issues include:

  • Airway Obstruction: well developed airways allow normal breathing through the nose when the mouth is closed. While this may sound trivial, nasal breathing is important because it’s now known to be vital to good health. Airway obstruction has been linked to developmental delays, sleep disorders, behavioral disturbances, and later can lead to hypertension, stroke, heart disease and even premature death. These sound scary but the treatment is easy if we are able to catch it early on!  We all can relate to our little ones that struggle with allergies!
  • Impaction: Dr. Sokoloff can prevent canine impactions if she evaluates the position of these teeth no later than age 8 years old. The benefit is tremendous and can eliminate the risk of tooth loss, gum loss and surgery later on.
  • Crossbites: by age 7 most children’s permanent molars and incisors should be descending. A trained eye can see early on if crowding or crossbites will be an issue as the rest of your child’s permanent teeth come in. The earlier treatment begins, the easier it will be because your child’s jaw is less developed at this early age and can be guided along the right path rather than working to reverse issues at a later age.
  • Overcrowding: Traditionally, orthodontists would say wait until age 11 or 12 to treat a crowding problem, but the problem isn’t going to get any better by waiting. Early treatment has been proven to correct narrow arches and create space for the teeth as well as for the tongue so they may function correctly when swallowing. Plus, early treatment can avoid the need for future tooth extraction or jaw surgery.

The benefits to Early Orthodontic treatment are clear:

  • Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct any habits that can cause bad bites later on, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment. Speaking of…
  • Two Phase Treatment. Phase 1 works with your young child to make space for their permanent teeth. Phase 2 begins once they are descending. Often children who undergo Phase 1 treatment have a much shorter Phase 2. This makes life easier for both them and you as their schedules get busier and busier.

Not every child will need early treatment, but if they need early treatment and if it is caught early on by a trained orthodontist, it could make a big difference in the outcomes of treatment later on by taking advantage of growth and also by possibly avoiding extractions.  Knowing the importance of early orthodontics is only part of the battle. Then the question is who do you talk to? We at Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics focus on your child’s individual needs and focus on early orthodontic treatment to avoid extractions and also to take advantage of growth!
