Stickables, The Newest Accessory to Your Child’s Smile

If you’re a parent of a 6-9 year old, you’re going to want to know about Stickables. They’re the newest release by Invisalign – the leading manufacturer of clear orthodontic aligners – and your kiddo is going to be interested.

While many parents come to our practice with teens, we (and the American Association of Orthodontics) actually advocate having your child seen by age 7. Why? At this early age, a trained orthodontic eye can spot development and, in certain cases, begin treatment that will ease and shorten your child’s overall need for orthodontic work.

But, getting back to the point: What are Stickables??? Stickables are fun stickers that are specifically designed to decorate your child’s Invisalign aligners. They’re non-toxic, totally safe, and super fun! Below are some of the reasons we at, Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, love them too:

  • Our youngest patients can have fun customizing their aligners to show off their treatment and new smile

  • Stickables give kids a sense of control and autonomy in their treatment

  • They allow you, the parent, to embrace your kid’s unique style – strengthening your relationship during the difficult tween years and increasing their self-confidence.

  • Less commitment – more style.
    • Remember the fun of picking your bracket colors for hanukkah or christmas only to wish they were something new come January? Stickables can swap out with each aligner – 2 weeks tops!
    • And, unlike colored bands on brackets, your child can swap out their designs on their own, as often as they’d like!

  • Harder to lose – not quite invisible means these aligners are less likely to get tossed in a napkin at the lunch table and subsequently trashed.
    •  Translation for grown-ups: less money spent on replacement aligners

  • Bottom line: Invisalign stickables makes wearing aligners fun!

At Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, we are always working to create a fun environment where we build real relationships with our patients and their families. Your child’s self confidence along with a healthy smile are of utmost importance – it’s one of the reasons we love Stickables.

If your child is approaching their 7th birthday (or if it’s already passed) and their smile is begging for some stickables style – contact our practice. We offer complimentary consultations – virtually or in-person – and will build a customized treatment plan based on your child’s needs.

Which is Better Braces or Invisalign?

Which is Better: Braces or Invisalign? A question that has arisen since the introduction of Invisalign in 2000. The discussion rages on, and will for a long time to come. But we can explore some of the advantages and disadvantages of each alignment process. The type of braces you use will be what your orthodontist believes will do the most effective work on your smile.

Which is Better Braces or Invisalign?

While “It depends” probably is not the answer you were expecting, it is the most accurate answer. Because every mouth is different, the method to correct alignment most effectively depends on the individual patient. One patient with an overbite and alignment problems might be a good candidate for Invisalign. At the same time, a patient with similar issues may be better suited to traditional braces or another method of correction.

When an orthodontist examines a patient, they can determine what treatment is going to be the most effective. Using x-rays, physical examination, and digital imaging, an orthodontist can “map” the patient’s mouth. This includes predicting future growth for patients who don’t have all their adult teeth yet. Using this “map,” a doctor can evaluate the specific problems and potential future problems and determine which type of braces would be best for that patient.

It is also true that in many cases, either treatment will be effective. In that instance, an orthodontist may offer the patient a choice of treatment plans. With this option, Invisalign generally wins due to the near invisibility of the alignment trays.

Looking at the Pros and Cons

When examining which is better between braces and Invisalign, it helps to look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Advantages of Invisalign

  • Clean aligners are almost invisible
  • Able to correct most orthodontic alignment problems
  • Treatment duration averages 12 to 18 months
  • Fewer appointments required during the treatment period
  • Less pain during treatment
  • No dietary restrictions
  • Oral hygiene is easier because trays are removed for cleaning, brushing, and flossing

Disadvantages of Invisalign

  • Not able to correct complex problems effectively
  • Patient-controlled/forgetting to wear alignment trays can lengthen treatment period

Advantages of Traditional Braces

  • Able to correct most orthodontic alignment problems, including complex cases
  • Orthodontist controlled adjustments/at work 24 hours every day

Disadvantages of Traditional Braces

  • Wires and brackets are very noticeable and obvious
  • Treatment period averages 18 to 36 months
  • Appointments are necessary for adjustments and potential emergencies
  • Wires and brackets may irritate the inside of the mouth
  • Required dietary restrictions to avoid damaging wires and brackets
  • Oral hygiene, especially flossing, is more difficult due to the adjustment wires

After looking at the pros and cons, from the patient perspective, Invisalign is a clear winner. However, the ultimate decision should be made using the recommendations of an orthodontist.

Invisalign – The Clear Choice for Orthodontics During Social Distancing

Invisalign – The Clear Choice for Orthodontics During Social Distancing

We live in strange times – gestures once taken for granted – handshakes, hugs, fist bumps – are now taboo; even our smiles are often hidden behind masks. But that doesn’t mean no one is seeing your smile. COVID-19 has meant socially distancing ourselves but it has also meant a boom in social media. Humans are social creatures and we’ve found new and creative ways to connect even while apart.

More selfies, virtual school, virtual meetings, and video chats are happening than ever before, which means we are even more up close and personal with our smiles. We all want to feel confident on screen – teens and adults alike. Self confidence is a huge factor in teen development and Invisalign has been found to increase teen confidence both during treatment and once they’ve achieved the smile they always wanted.

Now that the stay-at-home orders have been lifted, there is no reason to wait on getting the smile of your dreams for you or your child; and at Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, we have combined the technology of Invisalign with our highly experienced team to make sure you are as safe as possible while achieving that smile.

Why is Invisalign a great choice right now?

While we are all allowed out and about again, fears are still running high. We still need to be careful about what we touch, where we spend our time, and with whom. Invisalign allows for a more socially distanced approach to orthodontics, while still making sure you get he expertise of a trained and specialized orthodontist like Dr. Sokoloff. To get started, we use a 3D scanner to take images of your teeth and bone structure in order to map out a customized treatment plan and to build custom aligners that will help straighten your smile – invisibly. That means less time in your (or your child’s) mouth to get started.

Once your treatment plan is put in place, you will receive clear aligners to wear 22 hours a day – no skimping or treatment will take longer! We will want to see you for appointments, just like with braces, but with Invisalign we can space those appointments further out!

In order to further minimize your time at our practice – gosh we miss seeing our patients all the time but we know it’s safer – we have implemented curbside pick up for aligners. During your treatment, you will receive a few batches of clear Invisalign aligners at a time. We then gauge your progress at appointments (in person or virtual) and move to the next set – if all is going well, you can just pick them up curbside!

While we’d rather see each and every one of our patients all the time, we are doing our part to flatten the curve and keep everyone healthy and safe. Invisalign, paired with a virtual consultation, allows us to help you attain the smile of your dreams in the safest way possible – it’s the clear choice. Not just any practice can do this, at Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics we have the expertise with both orthodontics and technology to help you get that smile. Our fun and friendly office may look a bit different than it used to, but we’re still cooking up ways to make you feel the love while you’re here!

There is so much that we’re depriving ourselves of these days, don’t let the smile of your dreams be one of those things. We have flexible financing and low down payments.

Call us today(914) 949-0068  to schedule a free consultation – we can start virtually or in person – your choice!

5 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN TEEN®

5 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN TEEN®

Many parents in our area know about Invisalign®, the virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without metal braces. But as a leading Invisalign provider in the White Plains area, I’m often asked for more information about Invisalign® Teen.

Keeping it simple, rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign® Teen uses a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-made for your teen’s teeth. These are a result of precise images I take with the sophisticated iTero Element Scanner. Your teen simply wears these aligners over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners periodically—typically every two weeks. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place.

Here are the answers to the top five questions I’m asked about Invisalign Teen. I hope you find them helpful!

  1. INVISALIGN TEEN CAN BE AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES.

When worn according to the customized plan I set in place, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces. In fact, the chances are very high your teen will be a candidate for Invisalign since it can treat many of the common issues we see. Click here to set up an appointment to find out for sure.

  1. THERE ARE PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OF INVISALIGN TEEN OVER TRADITIONAL BRACES.

With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so your teen can play sports, musical instruments and eat their favorite foods without the worry that braces will get in the way. Plus, it’s much easier to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene.

  1. THIS  INVISIBLE SOLUTION CAN BOOST CONFIDENCE.

Research shows that parents underestimate the extent to which teens feel self-conscious about their smile—and their appearance in general. Wearing braces can often make this lack of confidence even worse. Invisalign Teen removes a potential source of anxiety, giving them more confidence during what can be a challenging time in their lives.

In fact, a recent study* found that only 22% of teens feel that wearing braces does/will boost their self-esteem; whereas, nearly half of teens report wearing Invisalign does/will boost their self-esteem (47%). Likewise, 40% of Teens reported that wearing braces would/does negatively impact their self-confidence during treatment; whereas, only 8% of Teens reported the same about wearing their Invisalign aligners. (After conversations with our Adult patients, we think the findings would be similar there as well.)

  1. YOUR TEEN DOES HAVE TO WEAR THE ALIGNERS MOST OF THE DAY.

Invisalign Teen is most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day and when the alighers are changed out approximately every two weeks. In fact, Invisalign Teen aligners have blue indicators that fade over time when used as directed. This helps me track compliance.

  1. YOU’LL SPEND LESS TIME AT MY OFFICE THAN WITH TRADITIONAL BRACES.

Invisalign Teen often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces do. There are no adjustments to make, no brackets to re-glue and no broken wires to fix. That means less emergency visits; and after the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every four to six weeks.

At my practice, Michael Sokoloff Orthodontics, I treat every patient like family. We offer customized financial plans and participate in most  insurance plans.
